Commissioned by Francisco Gonzales, “988” is a piece dedicated to victims of suicide, and to those who have struggled, or are currently struggling with suicidal ideation. Suicide is often a silent killer. We all know people who are struggling or have struggled with suicidal thoughts.
988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a 24/7 service for those who are experiencing mental crisis. The reason I have named this piece “988”, is to further the knowledge that there is help for those who are battling mental crisis. It is also a reminder that these thoughts will pass, and that you will make it through.
“988” brings listeners into the silent struggle that someone experiences with suicidal thoughts. The piece ebbs in and out of thoughts of good and bad. Eventually the thoughts become overwhelming. Yet, the individual makes it past their struggle, and finds inner peace. The ending doesn’t necessarily reflect a perfect peace of mind--- but instead pays homage to the reality that mental health is an ongoing ordeal, that can take time to balance.
