Growing up in the United States, I have been consistently exposed to news of mass murders, school shootings, and general violence. So much exposure to these events has left many people unphased by new catastrophes--- they are just part of the daily news. Much more common, individuals seem more upset about differing opinion, than the fact that violence is happening, and little action is being set against it.
I was too hardened against this issue until my community was affected by a school shooting.
Luckily, I did not go to the school affected, but my brother did. At the time the shooting happened, he had already graduated, but my family still had many close friends who were at this school. The entire community was affected by this event, everyone knew either the victims, or someone who was close to the victims. To this day, the community feels the impact of this event.
Questions from a Choir of Ghosts is a social justice piece which highlights the issue of deadly gun violence in the United States. Set from the perspective of a group who has been taken by this violence, the piece asks many questions on why nothing is being done, and why people are arguing instead of creating real change. The piece intentionally isn’t political as it does not give answers to what we should do, but instead asks the listener to go deep within themselves to come up with the solution to this very real problem.
